Late Tallies Propel Sound Tigers to Preseason Win

Sep 28, 2019

The Bridgeport Islanders, proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, used a flurry of quick goals late in the third period to complete a comeback 4-2 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack at Webster Bank Arena on Saturday.

Oliver Wahlstrom and David Quenneville came up clutch in the final frame, while Christopher Gibson and Jared Coreau shared the net as part of the win, Bridgeport’s first of the preseason.

It was a fairly pedestrian first period as there were just 14 combined shots on goal - seven from each side. Gibson stopped every chance that came his way through the first 20 minutes. The Sound Tigers opened the scoring at 12:09 of the first period when Nic Pierog fired a slap shot top shelf, directly off of a faceoff win from Kyle MacLean.

The Wolf Pack pushed much harder physically to begin the second period and the Sound Tigers struggled to register shots on net. Wahlstrom was sent to the box for tripping at the 7:53 mark, and Hartford took advantage. Tim Gettinger tied the game at one apiece at 9:22 of the second period. Gettinger entered the zone quickly and put a backhand shot past Gibson.

At the halfway mark, Coreau replaced Gibson in the Sound Tigers net and nearly three minutes later, Gettinger was sent to the box for hooking at 12:30. Not until that power play did Bridgeport register their first shot on goal of the period.

The contest saw its first solid scrum about halfway through the third as Hartford’s Mason Geersten had to fend off punches from Tanner Pond and others. Ben Thomson was also given a five-minute major and game misconduct for being the third man in. With Hartford on the power play, the visitors managed to make it count for the second time as Nick Jones poked a shot home on the short side of Coreau to give the Wolf Pack their first lead.

With six minutes to play, Bridgeport got back in the game as the highly touted Wahlstrom sent a wrist shot past goaltender Adam Huska to make it 2-2. Just seconds later, the Sound Tigers regained the lead thanks to a top-shelf wrist shot from Quenneville in the final two minutes.

Despite some late trouble with penalties, Cole Bardreau sealed the Sound Tigers’ victory with an empty-net goal.
